Poor law, order in Karachi intolerable: Nisar

KARACHI: Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan said on Monday that maintaining law and order was the responsibility of the province but the central government of the PML-N would not tolerate the poor security situation in the port city.
Nisar was talking to journalists at the Raja House of Pir Pagara Sibgatullah Shah Rashdi on Monday after attending a meeting with senior officials, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad.

He said that peace in Karachi was possible if the law-enforcement agencies were given full powers with no political interference and no political pressure from any side was assured. In his first-ever visit to the city after assuming power, the interior minister held a detailed meeting with the spiritual leader of Hurs Pir Sibgatullah Shah at the Raja House.

Both the leaders discussed the prevailing law and order situation in the city, especially in Lyari where people were forced to migrate. Those present in the meeting included General Secretary Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh, nephew of Pir Pagara, Sardar Yasir Sain, Kamran Tessori, Salim Zia of the PML N and others.

Chaudhry Nisar informed the media that security agencies had given assurances that peace could be restored if full powers were given to them without any political interference and pressures from any quarter.

The volatile situation in the city, he said, disturbed the entire peace of the country and it badly affected affairs of the state. He disclosed that a high-level meeting with the DG Rangers, CM and governor was held and certain measures had been taken for peace. In this connection, all the stakeholders would be taken into confidence as the federal government would act accordingly and would no longer sit silent, he said.

In the light of the report presented by the DG IB and federal interior secretary, he said that certain decisions had been taken which would be conveyed to the provincial government. Chaudhry Nisar especially met Pir Pagara and explained his party’s policy over the forthcoming presidential election scheduled to be held on August 6. The PML-F is an ally of the PML-N in the Centre.

The visit comes after the prime minister instructed the interior minister to look into the deteriorating law and order situation of the metropolis and asked him to take the input of

all the provincial authorities and security agencies to finalise the draft for the first national security policy.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who also personally wanted to visit Karachi, instructed Ch Nisar to address the issues relating to law and order situation and especially get some guidelines from Pir Pagara with regard to the presidential election, he told media.

The prime Minister would give the final decision regarding its contender for the president in a day or two after taking its ally and especially Pir Pagara into confidence.

On the question of All Parties Conference he said government had decided to invite senior leaders of all the political parties within next a few days to the Prime Minister’s office and would get their suggestions and recommendations on issues pertaining to terrorism, law and order situation, especially the worsening law and order in Karachi.

Pir Pagara while welcoming the interior minister said that Nawaz Sharif had taken PML-F into confidence and they had detailed meeting with the minister on law and order situation and they had also extended all out support to the centre for lasting peace in the port city, he said.

“Karachi is the backbone of the country and if it is disturbed entire country is disturbed, country’s peace is linked to Karachi’s peace which is not an easy task as everyone has to sit together to resolve the situation,” he said and added, “Karachi situation is worst which has to be tackled tactfully.”

Without presence of Pir Pagara in the APC, results would not be fruitful and Ch Nisar requested him on behalf of prime minister to participate in the conference.

He shared details of the meeting with the chief minister, governor and the law enforcement agencies and with the media stating that he had clearly said that Karachi situation should not be taken as easy but it needed resolute actions to be taken above any party politics.

Khan said that he discussed the situation in Karachi with the governor, the chief minister and their team in the light of a report earlier compiled by interior secretary and DG IB.

“We have presented a draft plan to the government of Sindh especially Chief Minister Sindh for the peace and tranquility in the province”, said Khan. The federal government he said was willing to cooperate with the provincial government to deal with the security threats.

The security personnel’s, he said, had given assurance that peace could be restored if there was a will.

With regard to any time frame for the peace, he said, their intentions were clear and could not give any specific time if all the stakeholders and government sincerely efforts for the peace it would not be a distant dream, he said.

The Karachi situation needed extreme attention and could not be tackled through traditional methods and PML-N government would take all the stakeholders into confidence in bringing peace in the city.
