Oil pipe blast in eastern China kills 22

BEIJING: Leaked oil from a ruptured oil pipe caught fire and exploded Friday in an eastern Chinese port city, killing at least 22 people and injuring others.

The oil pipeline owned by China’s largest oil refiner, Sinopec, ruptured and while being repaired caught fire and exploded, a district government in the port city of Qingdao said.

It said 22 people were killed.

Authorities ruled out the possibility of terrorism, but said the incident remained under investigation.

Calls to Sinopec’s headquarters in Beijing were not immediately answered.

Photos posted online show shattered concrete slabs and large amounts of black smoke rising from the port city. (AP)
