Pakistan 46-1 after dismissing Sri Lanka for 204

ABU DHABI: Pakistan bowled out Sri Lanka for 204 runs in their first innings on the opening day of the first Test here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Tuesday.

Pakistan were 46 for one at stumps, losing Khurram Manzoor off the last ball of the day for 16 while his partner Ahmed Shehzad, who is playing his first Test, was at the crease with an unbeaten 25.

Earlier, fast bowler Junaid Khan grabbed his fourth five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka and Bilawal Bhatti made an impressive debut with three for 65 while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal claimed two for 32.

Captain Angelo Mathews launched the late counterattack by hitting 91 off 147 balls with 15 fours before he was the last man to be dismissed after adding 80 valuable runs with the tailenders.

Bhatti started the dramatic collapse by having three wickets in the space of eight balls after Sri Lanka appeared to have a confident start of 67-1.

He had Kaushal Perera (20), Mahela Jayawardene (5) and Dinesh Chandimal (0) before Khan (5-58) struck four blows.

Saeed Ajmal ended Mathews´ resistance by having the Sri Lankan captain stumped after initially wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal had fumbled.

The toss was won by Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq who sent Sri Lanka into bat.

India's Test and ODI teams named for NZ tour

NEW DELHI: Indian selectors on Tuesday dropped experienced allrounder Yuvraj Singh from the one-day international squad for an upcoming tour of New Zealand, which will consist of five ODIs and two Tests.

The 32-year-old left-hander, who was man of the series during India´s triumph at the 2011 World Cup at home, did not figure in the 16-member squad after scoring only one half-century in his last 12 one-day innings and also having little success with the ball.

Yuvraj has been having a turbulent time since the World Cup as he fought off a rare germ cancer to make a comeback last year. He was dropped for this year´s Champions Trophy that India won in England, before again figuring in one-day games against Australia, West Indies and South Africa.

Rookie seam bowler Ishwar Pandey was named in both the Test and one-day squads while pace bowler Varun Aaron made a comeback to the one-day squad after a gap of two years following a back injury.

Pandey has been prolific in domestic cricket with a tally of 131 wickets in 31 first-class games and 22 in 16 domestic one-dayers. A surprise entry in the one-day squad was 29-year-old allrounder Stuart Binny, the son of former India player Roger Binny, who was a member of the World Cup winning squad of 1983 and is presently a national selector.

In what was the only change to the Test squad that toured South Africa, left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha made way for Pandey.

India´s tour of New Zealand starts with the first of five one-dayers in Napier on Jan. 19. The other ODIs will be played in Hamilton (Jan. 22), Auckland (Jan. 25), Hamilton (Jan. 28) and Wellington (Jan. 31).

India will then play a two-day practice game at Whangarei on Feb. 2-3 before the Test matches in Auckland (Feb. 6-10) and Wellington (Feb. 14-18).

India Test squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Ambati Rayudu, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Ishwar Pandey.

Winds, rain put Antarctic ship rescue on hold

Sydney: Strong winds and rain prevented the helicopter rescue early Wednesday of passengers on a Russian ship stuck in ice off Antarctica, Australian authorities said as those onboard resigned themselves to a longer wait.

The Akademik Shokalskiy, carrying 74 passengers and crew, has not moved since it became trapped about 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont d'Urville on December 24.

Efforts to free it using icebreaking ships have failed, with the Australian government's supply ship Aurora Australis admitting Tuesday it was unable to reach the marooned vessel, forcing the more complex helicopter rescue.

"Rescue situation in Antarctic remains unchanged," the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said in an update on Wednesday. "Helicopter unable to fly in current weather conditions. Raining in area & winds 20-30 knots."

Australian authorities, who are coordinating the rescue, plan to use the helicopter on board the Chinese-flagged icebreaker Xue Long to bring 52 passengers off the boat, leaving behind its 22 crew members.

They would then be taken by barge from the Xue Long to the Aurora Australis.

AMSA said the latest information was that the Chinese vessel was "moving and manoeuvring slowly around the ice", allaying fears that the Xue Long had itself become trapped.

"The Rescue Coordination Centre has no information indicating they are stuck in the ice at this time," spokeswoman Lisa Martin said.

Passengers on the stranded ship had been following in the footsteps of Australian Sir Douglas Mawson and his 1911-1914 expedition and they greeted the New Year with cheer, singing an anthem they wrote to ring in 2014.

Giving a rousing rendition from the top deck of the Akademik Shokalskiy in footage posted on YouTube, they sang of "having fun doing science in Antarctica".

"Happy New Year," tweeted one of the expedition's leaders, Chris Turney early Wednesday.

"Warm, wet & windy with the AAE (Australasian Antarctic Expedition)," he said, adding the temperature was 1.5 degrees Celsius (35 degrees Fahrenheit).

"Poor visibility. Unlikely we're flying this morning."

The team on board has been carrying out the same scientific experiments that Mawson's group conducted during the 1911-1914 expedition in the hope they could help in climate change research.(AFP)

N. Korea warns of nuclear disaster, threatens US

SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un said Wednesday the Korean peninsula would be engulfed by "massive nuclear disaster" if war breaks out there again, warning the US it will not be safe in the event of a conflict.

"If the war breaks out again in this land, it will bring about a massive nuclear disaster and the US will never be safe," Kim said in his New Year message, broadcast on state TV.

"We are faced with a dangerous situation in which a small, accidental military clash can lead to an all-out war," he said.

Kim added he would not beg for peace and vowed to protect the impoverished but nuclear-armed North with strong self-defence measures against enemies. The young leader also hailed the recent execution of his powerful uncle as a "resolute action," labelling Jang Song-Thaek "scum".

"Our party took resolute action to remove... scum elements within the party last year," Kim said, accusing Jang of trying to build his own powerbase within the ruling party.

"Our party´s timely, accurate decision to purge the anti-party, anti-revolutionary elements helped greatly cement solidarity within our party," he said.

It was the first time Kim has publicly criticised his disgraced uncle, who was executed on December 12 on charges including treason and corruption.

Jang, 67, played a key role in cementing the leadership of the inexperienced Kim Jong-Un, who took power after the death of his father and longtime ruler, Kim Jong-Il, in December 2011. But Jang´s growing political power and influence drew resentment from his nephew barely half of his age, analysts said. (AFP)

Dubai dazzles in global 2014 party

DUBAI: Dubai attempted to smash the fireworks world record as it ushered in 2014 with a bang, as a wave of pyrotechnics swept around the globe to celebrate the New Year.

The Middle East hub was hoping to break the Guinness World Record for the largest-ever display, pledging to set off more than 400,000 fireworks.

People crowded in the streets below took pictures on their mobile phones as the salvo lit up the Burj Khalifa, the world´s tallest tower at 830 metres high.

To the strains of Arabic pop music, the five-minute thundering display filled the skies above the United Arab Emirates´ main city.

Kuwait set the record in 2011 with an hour-long blast of 77,282 fireworks.

Sydney had the first of the world´s major pyrotechnic shows, with seven tonnes of explosives lighting up Australia´s biggest city.

Fireworks shot off the Opera House for the first time in more than 10 years as part of the extravaganza, focused on the Harbour Bridge.

"The Opera House was fantastic," said Murphy Robertson, from Denver in the United States, after watching the Aus$6 million ($5.4 million) show which attracted some 1.5 million people to harbour vantage points.

"The thing that really got me was the sparks, the golden curtain of sparks going off the bridge."

Kiribati and Samoa in the Pacific were the first to see in the New Year at 1000 GMT Tuesday, in a wave of celebrations that will finish on the United States´ remote Howland and Baker Islands at 1200 GMT Wednesday.

Tonga, located near the international dateline, was one of the first nations to say farewell to 2013, holding a prayer festival that culminated with a bamboo "cannon" fired into the air.

In Antarctica, passengers and crew on the Akademik Shokalskiy ship -- awaiting rescue after being trapped for a week in ice -- rang in the new year with a specially composed song lamenting the "great shame we are still stuck here".

In Hong Kong, the city´s skyscrapers were lit up by a dazzling eight-minute pyrotechnics show fired from a one-kilometre line of barges along Victoria Harbour.

An estimated 400,000 revellers packed the shoreline to watch the show.

Further down, groups of teenagers gathered with sign boards offering "free hugs" to passers by.

"We´re doing it because it´s fun and it makes people happy," said 16-year-old local Wendy Yip.

In Japan, the celebrations were quieter. Small fireworks displays were held across the country. But millions of people turned out to local temples and shrines to greet the new year with contemplation and to pray for peace for relatives.

Muted celebrations in typhoon-ravaged Philippines

For areas ravaged by Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, celebrations were much more muted than usual.

In Tacloban, which bore the brunt of the November 8 storm, officials planned a midnight fireworks display to try to raise spirits in a region where nearly 8,000 died or are still missing.

In the ruined farming village of San Isidro, residents are still grappling with the overpowering stench of death as 1,400 corpses stacked in black body bags lay in a field, more than seven weeks after the tragedy.

Seoul rang in 2014 with a ritual clanging of the city´s 15th-century bronze bell 33 times, reflecting the ancient custom for marking a new year.

In Singapore, people flocked to the financial district for fireworks while thousands of white spheres were launched on Marina Bay, holding residents´ wishes for 2014.

Jakarta set up 12 city centre stages for performances to showcase the vast archipelago´s kaleidoscope of cultures.

In Mumbai, revellers celebrated a court victory over the local police force, which pushed back closing time in bars and restaurants to 5:00am instead of 1:30am.

In Rio de Janeiro, authorities are predicting that 2.3 million people -- a third of them tourists -- will crowd Copacabana Beach for fireworks and pop music as Brazil kick off a year that will see them host football´s World Cup.

Major spectaculars will also light Berlin´s Brandenburg Gate and central London when parliament´s Big Ben bell chimes midnight.

Some 300,000 revellers are expected at the Champs-Elysees in Paris, while about a million people will gather in New York to mark the stroke of midnight and the traditional New Year´s Eve ball-drop over Times Square.

Cape Town will have a free concert with fireworks and a 3D tribute to former South African president Nelson Mandela, who died on December 5.

In the Netherlands however, Dutch police arrested 100 youths who pelted firefighters with bottles and fireworks in a central town notorious for its unruly New Year celebrations. One man was killed by fireworks in the small northern town of Medemblik. (AFP)

Latvia adopts euro, becoming 18th eurozone member

RIGA: Latvia officially adopted the euro at the stroke of midnight local time, making the former Soviet state of two million people the 18th member of the crisis-hit eurozone.

As a huge firework display roared in Riga, the people of the Baltic state bade a reluctant farewell to their cherished lat -- seen as a symbol of independence from the Soviet Union -- to switch to the troubled European single currency. (AFP)

Revelers welcome 2014 with huge fireworks displays

CANBERRA: With fireworks, dancing and late-night reverie, millions around the world welcomed 2014 on Tuesday, gathering for huge displays of jubilation and unity as the new year was arriving across 24 time zones.

In Australia, fireworks sprayed from the sails of the Sydney Opera House and the city's harbor bridge at midnight. Revelers in Dubai awaited what was supposed to be the world's largest fireworks show.

In Ukraine, anti-government protesters hoped to set their own record for the most people to sing a national anthem at the same time.

Revelers heading to New York City's Times Square could expect the annual ball drop but no mayor this year. The new year was to be rung in by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor instead.

Closer to the edge of the International Dateline, New Zealand bid farewell to 2013 with fireworks erupting from Auckland's Sky Tower as cheering crowds danced in the streets of the South Pacific island nation's largest city.

Known for glitz, glamor and over-the-top achievements like the world's tallest tower, Dubai hoped to break another record by creating the largest fireworks show ever.

Organizers planned to light up the city's coastline with a flying falcon made out of fireworks that would move across a massive man-made palm-shaped island alongside a countdown in fireworks. Organizers say they will also create a burst of light out of fireworks to imitate a sunrise and dazzle spectators with a United Arab Emirates flag that could also break records for being the largest ever made of fireworks.

The 6-minute extravaganza will include 500,000 fireworks from 400 firing locations, all synchronized by 100 computers from stations across the city, said Barrett Wissman, co-chairman of IMG Artists that is managing the event. Guinness World Record officials will be on hand to measure the scale of the event.

Wissman said the display will cover 30 miles (48 kilometers) of seafront. "It is really mind-blowing, the size of this," he said.

In Sydney, organizers had expected to set off 7 metric tons (7.7 U.S. tons) of pyrotechnics in 12 seconds. The estimate appeared accurate.

"It filled up the whole sky," said Mona Rucek, a 28-year-old tourist from Munich, Germany.

In Tokyo, five priests at the Zojoji temple used ropes to swing a wooden pole against a large bell, sounding the first of 108 gongs to mark the new year. Simultaneously, "2014" lit up in white lights on the modern Tokyo Tower in the background.

Both Japanese and tourists jammed the temple grounds for the traditional ceremony. Suburban resident Juji Muto said he was curious to hear how the bell sounded. At his age, the 75-year-old retiree said he wishes as every year for good health in the new year.

China planned light shows at part of the Great Wall near Beijing and at the Bund waterfront in Shanghai. The city of Wuhan in central Hubei province called off its fireworks show and banned fireworks downtown to avoid worsening its smog.

Pope Francis used his year-end prayer service of thanksgiving to urge people to ask themselves: Did they spend 2013 to further their own interests or to help others?

In his homily, the pontiff asked people to reflect if they used 2013 to make the places where they live more livable and welcoming. Citing Rome as an example, Francis said the city is full of tourists, but also refugees.

Britain planned to welcome 2014 with a mixture of futuristic fireworks, torch-lit tradition and worries about immigration.

The United Kingdom is only one day away from lifting restrictions on workers from Romania and Bulgaria, a prospect which has many on the country's right worried. Britain's top-selling The Sun newspaper carried a startling feature quoting Romanian bus passengers en route to London as vowing to beg and steal their way across the country.

The right-leaning Daily Mail reported that planes and buses from Romania to the U.K. were "sold out" — a claim ridiculed by journalists who easily found cheap flights online.

For people already in London, the New Year will give them the opportunity to literally taste the fireworks.

The city's mayor — in conjunction with telecommunications company Vodafone — said this year's explosive display would come packed with peach-flavored snow, edible banana confetti and orange-scented bubbles, allowing people to feast with more than just their eyes. The multisensory display will also include scratch-and-sniff programs, LED wristbands and fruit-flavored sweets.

At Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, hundreds of thousands of people were starting to assemble for what organizers say is one of the world's biggest outdoors New Year's party, a traditional German gathering featuring jelly doughnuts and sparkling wine.

More than 260 people had been injured by firecracker blasts and celebratory gunfire in the Philippines ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations.

Department of Health spokesman Dr. Eric Tayag said he expected the number of injuries to rise sharply as Filipinos commemorate the end of a year marked by tragic disasters, including a Nov. 8 typhoon that left more than 6,100 dead and nearly 1,800 missing.

"Many here are welcoming the new year after losing their mothers, fathers, siblings and children so you can imagine how it feels," said village chief Maria Rosario Bactol of Anibong community in Tacloban, the city worst hit by Typhoon Haiyan. "I tell them to face the reality, to move on and stand up, but I know it will never be easy."

In Hong Kong, pyrotechnics were fired near the Kowloon peninsula and from the tops of seven skyscrapers. A British colonial-era canon was fired at midnight in a tradition dating from the end of World War II.

New Year's celebrations in Indonesia were widespread except in the city of Banda Aceh where Islamic clerics prohibit Muslims from celebrating New Year's Eve.

In New York City, outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who hobnobbed with celebrities during past Times Square celebrations, is sitting out this year's festivities to spend time with family and friends. Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio will be sworn in at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday at his Brooklyn home.

Sotomayor, a New York City native, will lead the final 60-second countdown and push the ceremonial button to signal the descent of the Times Square New Year's Eve ball in front of an estimated 1 million celebrants. (AP)

Egypt seizes Brotherhood, Islamist leaders´ assets

CAIRO: Egypt´s interim government has ordered the assets of more than 500 Muslim Brotherhood and Islamist leaders seized — including those of the country´s ousted president — as part of an ever-tightening crackdown on the group, senior judicial and security officials said Tuesday.

Abdel-Azzem el-Ashri, a Justice Ministry spokesman, said that a ministerial inventory committee ordered the "movable and immovable properties" of 572 Muslim Brotherhood leaders seized.

Another Justice Ministry official said leaders on the list included toppled President Mohammed Morsi and his family, as well as provincial Brotherhood leaders and members of its General Guidance Bureau, which is the group´s executive body.

A security official said the list also included female Muslim Brotherhood members like Azza el-Garf and wife of leader Khairat el-Shater and his daughter.

He said other Islamist leaders include Assem Abdel-Maged, the leader of Gamaa Islamiyah, which waged an anti-government insurgency in 1990s against autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

The two officials said that the list includes those indicted in cases of inciting violence and those are under investigation or could be investigated.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists.

The order is part of a wider state crackdown on the Brotherhood, first banned by a court order in September and declared a "terrorist" organization by the military-backed interim government last week.

The court order allowed the government to form the committee that inventoried of the group´s finances and ordered its confiscation.

The government made the "terrorist" designation by linking it to a wave of recent militant attacks targeting security forces without publicly presenting any evidence backing its claim.

The move signaled a new era of zero tolerance of the group and ended any reconciliation efforts.

The group denies being involved in the attacks and continues to hold near-daily protests demanding the reinstatement of Morsi, toppled in a July 3 military coup after millions rallied against him.

Bangladesh political violence kills 507 in 2013: rights group

DHAKA: A total of 507 people were killed in political violence in Bangladesh in 2013, making it the deadliest year since the country´s independence four decades ago, a human rights group said Tuesday.

The Ain of Salish Kendra (ASK) said most of the deaths occurred during clashes between security forces and opposition protesters over a controversial war crimes tribunal and changes to the electoral system.

"A total of 507 people died in 848 acts of political violence this year," ASK acting executive director Nur Khan Liton told AFP.

"Police used excessive power in handling the opposition protests and in many cases they opened fire," Liton said, adding the group´s findings were based on its own investigations and newspaper reports.

The group´s figure is nearly twice the number known to have died in the political violence this year.

According to an AFP count based on confirmation by police officials, 278 people have died, many by police shooting.

The report came amid escalating violence across the country ahead of a January 5 general election.

Opposition protesters demand that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina quit and call off the polls.

Hasina has vowed to go ahead with the election despite a boycott by all opposition parties and a decision by Western nations not to send monitors for the vote.

On Tuesday an activist from the Jamaat-e-Islami party, the country´s largest Islamist opposition party, was killed during clashes with police in the border district of Meherpur, a local officer said.

A ruling party supporter was burnt to death late Monday after opposition protesters allegedly set fire to his shop in another remote border district in the northwest, police said.

Tension also rose in the capital after the opposition led by two-times former prime minister Khaleda Zia called a non-stop nationwide transport blockade from Wednesday to try to scupper the election.

Zia has been under de facto house arrest since Wednesday with scores of policemen cordoning off her residence.

10 dead as Syria regime shell hits bus in Aleppo city: NGO

BEIRUT: At least 10 people, including two children, were killed in Syria´s northern city of Aleppo after a regime tank shell smashed into a bus, an NGO said on Tuesday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the shell hit a bus in the Tariq al-Bab neighbourhood, adding that the toll could rise because a number of people had been seriously wounded.

The Britain-based group said a woman was also among those killed in the blast. A video filmed by activists and uploaded by the Observatory on the sharing website YouTube shows chaotic scenes, with the back of a red public bus ablaze and spewing thick plumes of black smoke.

Round loaves of bread apparently sent flying from a street stall litter the ground along with rubble from a nearby building and glass from the windows of the bus and a minivan partially destroyed in the blast.

Groups of men carry injured passengers away, some trailing blood on the ground as they are moved.

Others lift a body that appeared to be partly burnt in the blast, missing its legs. More than 126,000 people have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the conflict in the country in March 2011.

Death toll from Russian bombings rises to 33

MOSCOW: The death toll from two suicide bombings in the southern Russian city of Volgograd has risen to 33 after two victims succumbed to their injuries, the emergency situations ministry said Tuesday.

"A victim of the explosion at the train station on December 29 died last night in the Volgograd hospital and the number of dead has risen to 18," ministry spokesman Dmitry Ulanov told.

He added that another victim of Monday´s suicide bombing on a trolleybus had also died, raising the toll from that blast to 15.President Vladimir Putin has ordered stepped-up security across the country after the trolleybus bombing at the peak of the morning rush and Sunday´s suicide attack, which was blamed on a suspected female suicide bomber.

The attacks have heightened security fears around the Sochi Winter Olympics which open on February 7.Doku Umarov, the leader of militants seeking to impose an Islamist state throughout North Caucasus, has ordered rebels to target civilians outside the region and disrupt the Games.

Indonesian police arrest suspect in suicide bombing

JAKARTA: Indonesian police arrested a suspected terrorist for his alleged role in a suicide bombing on a police station and militant training activities, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Indonesia´s anti-terrorism police squad, Detachment 88, arrested Ato Margono for escorting a suicide bomber to a police station on the island of Sulawesi in June, National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told.

The bomber -- who carried out the attack on a motorbike in Poso district, a known hotbed for militant activity -- killed only himself and injured a construction worker with the bomb made of nails.

Margono is linked to the country´s most-wanted terror suspect, Santoso, leader of the Poso-based Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen group.

"The suspect was arrested on Monday. He was involved in a number of terrorist activities, and he is believed to have shot a villager dead in a separate incident," Amar said. The suspect is also accused of carrying out a garage bombing and fundraising to finance terrorist activities, Amar said.

"He has also worked as a courier for the Santoso network, and is connected with militant training in Poso," he said.Police have arrest 12 alleged members of the Santoso group this year, Amar said, but have been unable to locate their leader.

Body clock may be to blame when tots fight sleep

WASHINGTON: When youngsters continually struggle to fall asleep at night, new research suggests maybe their body clock doesn’t match their bedtime.

That doesn’t mean tots should be up at all hours.

"Just like nutrition and exercise, sleep is critical for good health," said sleep scientist Monique LeBourgeois of the University of Colorado, Boulder, who is leading the research.

The ultimate goal is to help reset a delayed sleep clock so that young children can settle down more easily, she said. Hint: It seems to have a lot to do with light.

We all have what´s called a circadian rhythm, a master biological clock, that regulates when we become sleepy, and when we´re more alert. Those patterns vary with age: It´s the reason teenagers are notorious for late nights and difficult-to-wake mornings.

But how does that clock work in preschoolers, who need more sleep than older kids or adults? A first-of-its-kind study tracked 14 healthy youngsters for six days to begin finding out.

The children, ages 2½ to 3, wore activity monitors on their wrists to detect when they slept. Parents kept diaries about bedtime routines.

Then on the last afternoon, researchers visited each home, dimming lights and covering windows. Then every 30 minutes for six hours leading up to the child´s appointed bedtime, they also coaxed each tot to chew on some dental cotton to provide a sample of saliva.

The reason: To test for levels of a hormone named melatonin that is key to the sleep cycle and also sensitive to light. At some point every evening, people´s melatonin levels surge and a while later, they begin to feel sleepy. Among adults who sleep well, that melatonin rise tends to happen about two hours before whatever is their chosen bedtime.

For preschoolers, the new study found that on average, the melatonin surge occurred around 7:40 p.m. The children tended to be tucked in around 8:10 p.m., and most were asleep 30 minutes later, LeBourgeois reported in the journal Mind, Brain and Education.

When melatonin rose earlier in the evening, tots who hit the sack around 8 fell asleep a bit faster. But when the melatonin surge was closer to bedtime, the youngsters were more likely to fuss or make curtain calls after lights-out.

Two children in the study actually were tucked in before their rise in melatonin ever occurred, and it took them up to an hour past bedtime to fall asleep, she said.

"We don´t know what that sweet spot is yet," LeBourgeois said, but the data suggest bedtime is easiest if the melatonin surge occurred at least 30 minutes earlier.

The study reinforces what doctors have long suspected is one bedtime barrier, said Dr. Jyoti Krishna, a pediatric sleep expert at the Cleveland Clinic. Other factors can disrupt a child´s sleep, too, such as noise, stress or anxiety, or disrupted home routines, he cautioned.

"But this paper reminds us that, hey, there is a time that the body is more ready to sleep than at other times," Krishna said.

The National Institutes of Health says preschoolers need 11 to 12 hours of sleep each day; some typically comes from an afternoon nap.

Parents don´t have melatonin tests as a guide, so Krishna advises looking for cues when setting a bedtime — yawning, rubbing eyes — and then to adjust that bedtime as the child gets older.

"The melatonin onset and our body rhythms change," Krishna said. "You can´t stick to what worked two years ago with this child, because this child is now a different child."

About 25 percent of young children experience some type of sleep difficulty, including trouble settling down at bedtime, LeBourgeois said. Harried parents aside, there´s concern that early-in-life bedtime frustration might lead to more persistent sleep trouble.

"Listen to your child´s physiology," she advised. Some steps that might help:

—Research shows that in adults, too much light in the evening delays the melatonin surge and subsequent sleepiness. While there´s no data in young children yet, LeBourgeois says dimming the lights about an hour before bedtime makes sense.

—Avoid electronics near bedtime, because they generate a specific type of light that triggers wakefulness. LeBourgeois was horrified to hear one parent offer a sleepless youngster an iPad to play with as long as the child stayed in the bedroom.

—And make sure blackout shades aren´t keeping your children from getting enough morning sunlight, she said. Light in the morning also is key to keeping the biological sleep clock on schedule.

Stay tuned: With funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, LeBourgeois has begun a larger study that will track sleep patterns of 40 2-year-olds until they´re 5. She´ll also measure their light exposure, and periodically record their brain waves during sleep, in a bid to better understand the influence of sleep patterns on children´s development. (AP)

Bird flu subtype re-emerges in Hong Kong: official

HONG KONG: An elderly man has contracted a mild form of bird flu in the first case of its type for four years, Hong Kong officials said on Monday.

"We are now investigating a confirmed human case of influenza A H9N2, affecting a man aged 86," Leung Ting-hung, controller of the city's Center for Health Protection, told reporters.

H9N2 is an avian flu subtype that mainly affects ducks and chickens but can also pass to humans, causing mild symptoms. Under Hong Kong law cases of such infection must be made public, according to Leung.

Since 1999 Hong Kong has reported seven such cases with the last one reported in 2009, Leung said.

The man, who lives in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen bordering Hong Kong, was diagnosed with the disease after returning to Hong Kong on Saturday.

He is now in stable condition in an isolation ward.

"As the temperature is cooler in recent weeks, we expect there may be other cases of avian influenza being detected," Leung said.

On Thursday the city reported the first death from the more serious H7N9 strain of bird flu.

The male victim had returned from Shenzhen, as had a woman who contracted Hong Kong's first reported case of H7N9. She is still in hospital in stable condition.

Scientists have warned that avian flu could potentially cause a pandemic if it mutates into a form easily transmissible between humans. (AFP)

Iran says ´good progress´ in nuclear talks

TEHRAN: Iran´s chief negotiator said Tuesday talks in Geneva with world powers late into the night on implementing a landmark nuclear deal had made "good progress," according to state TV.

"The negotiations continued until 4:30 am (0330 GMT) in Geneva and the two sides have made good progress on different issues, but we cannot prejudge the results before the end of the negotiations," lead negotiator Abbas Araqchi said.

He added that there would "probably be another round of negotiations before noon and before announcing the results. "Experts from Iran and the so-called P5+1 -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany -- have been holding technical talks on implementing an agreement reached November 24 on Iran´s controversial nuclear programme.

The interim deal requires that Iran freeze or curb its nuclear activities for six months in exchange for some sanctions relief while the two sides try to reach a comprehensive agreement.

Western nations and Israel have long suspected Iran is covertly pursuing a nuclear weapons capability alongside its civilian programme, charges denied by Tehran, which insists its uranium enrichment is for purely peaceful purposes.

Bangladesh orders arrest of factory owners for deadly fire

DHAKA: A Bangladesh court Tuesday ordered the arrest of owners of a garment factory where 111 workers were killed last year in the country´s worst such fire, after police laid charges.

The court in Dhaka issued the warrants for Delwar Hossain and his wife Mahmuda Akter and four others over the blaze that gutted the Tazreen factory where workers stitched clothes for Western retailers including Walmart.

Senior judicial magistrate Wasim Sheikh gave the order after declaring all six "fugitives" for failing to appear in court over charges laid by police earlier this month against 13 people over the tragedy, a prosecutor said. The magistrate formally accepted the charges against the 13 including the owners, factory managers and security guards, who all face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.

"Dhaka´s senior judicial magistrate Wasim Sheikh issued the warrants of arrest against the two fugitive owners ... and four other company officials for the Tazreen factory fire," prosecutor Anwarul Kabir told.

"The owners and 11 others have been charged with arson, culpable homicide not amounting to murder and death by negligence," Kabir said. Seven of those charged were in court or in custody.

The fire, the country´s deadliest at a garment factory, highlighted appalling safety problems in the sector, a mainstay of the economy, where about four million workers toil for some of the lowest sector wages in the world.

The country suffered an even greater tragedy just months later in April when the Rana Plaza garment factory complex collapsed in Dhaka´s outskirts, killing 1,135 people in one of the world´s worst industrial disasters.

The arrest order signals a toughening stand by local authorities against influential garment manufacturers, who openly flout safety rules for Bangladesh´s 4,500 garment factories, where deadly accidents are common.

Police last week said it was possibly the first time an owner has been charged over a fire in the sector, which accounts for up to 80 percent of the impoverished country´s exports.

Delwar Hossain, who since the tragedy has been barred from leaving the country, has been accused of breaching construction rules including building unsafe and narrow staircases in the nine-storey building.

Hossain, who is the managing director of the factory and his wife the chairperson, could not be contacted for comment despite several calls to his mobile phone numbers.

Musharraf says leaves his treason trial issue to army chief

ISLAMABAD: Former army chief and president of Pakistan, Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf says he leaves his treason trial issue to incumbent Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Gen Raheel Shairf, Geo News reported.

"I would say the whole army is upset. Certainly, they wouldn’t like anything happening to their ex-army chief, said the retired general while talking to a foreign news agency Monday.

In the same breath he also made it clear that army was not his last hope.

"Though the army chief has the final word but the top brass always goes through due consultations before an important decision is taken. Let’s see what the COAS does in this case”, said he.

Earlier, talking to media Sunday Musharraf said that he held current army chief General Raheel Sharif in "high esteem” and called him a "straight dealer."

He said he had tremendous support in the US, while saying that he did not expect the US to offer any public support for his legal situation.

Calling the treason trial a frame-up, Musharraf said he hoped the independent judiciary and the Supreme Court of Pakistan would do justice in his case.

Boasting about his tenure as the president of Pakistan, Musharraf claimed that not only the army but also the laymen still remembered his reforms, which put the country on the road to progress.

"My economic reforms alleviated the poverty to a level unparalleled by past regimes. During my time someone who could only afford to buy a motorcycle became able to own a car", the former president said.

“After having done so much for the development and welfare of the people, is this what I deserve?”

Later talking to Geo News, he raised alarm about his security.

"I fear for my life from Mullah Fazlullah led Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Baloch Liberation Army, Lal Masjid, and al-Qaeda", said the retired general.

He said that Talal Bugti, the son of late tribal leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, had even set a bounty on him.

On August 26, 2006, Akbar Bugti, who was the leader of Bugti tribe, was killed during a military operation launched against him by Musharraf.

Musharraf faces trial on treason accusations for actions taken while president from 2001 to 2008. He returned from exile in March and was charged under the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whom Musharraf deposed in a 1999 coup.

Pakistan Army has not made any direct public comment on the case. But it is thought to be reluctant to have its former chief suffer the indignity of trial by a civilian court.

Khan, Bhatti reduce Sri Lanka to 167-8

ABU DHABI: Pakistan fast bowler Junaid Khan grabbed his fourth five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka and Bilawal Bhatti made a dream debut to leave the tourists tottering at 167-8 on the opening day of the first test on Tuesday.

In a sensational collapse after lunch, Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for 100 runs against left-armer Khan (5-51) and Bhatti (3-59).

Captain Angelo Mathews was batting on 57 while Eranga Shaminda was not out on 12 at tea.

Sri Lanka looked in good shape at 67-1 before Bhatti had Kaushal Perera (20), Mahela Jayawardene (5) and Dinesh Chandimal (0) dismissed in eight balls and Khan wrecked the lower middle order.

Jayawardene was caught behind off a no-ball by Bhatti before he was dismissed in a similar fashion off the very next delivery. (AP)

Sri Lanka get to 66-1 at lunch against Pakistan

ABU DHABI: Sri Lanka´s Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Perera made a strong start after being sent in to bat by Pakistan on Tuesday´s opening day of the first test, reaching 66-1 at lunch.

Sri Lanka showed no rust after a nine-month break from test cricket, and coped well after being sent in on a pitch expected to favor Pakistan´s three pacemen.

Karunaratne hit five fours in his 38 before Asad Shafiq took a brilliant catch off the bowling of Junaid Khan to remove him.

Perera made it through to lunch on 20 not out while Kumar Sangakkara was on 8.

Pakistan gave debuts to opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad and fast bowler Bilawal Bhatti while Sri Lanka, which last played a test against Bangladesh in March, awarded test cap to offspinner Sachithra Senanayake.

Karunaratne was quick to punish any overpitched delivery and Sri Lanka scored a brisk 50 runs in the first hour off fast bowlers Junaid Khan, Bhatti and Rahat Ali.

Pakistan also lost one of its two television referrals when they thought Khan had found the outside edge of Perera bat for a catch to wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal when Perera was on 20, but TV umpire Sundaram Ravi upheld the onfield umpire Bruce Oxenford´s not out decision.

Karunaratne´s departure slowed down the scoring rate considerably with Sangakkara and Perera watchfully negotiating the last half an hour.

Sri Lanka, which lost the one-day series 3-2, is also strengthened with the return of leftarm spinner Rangana Herath and experienced Mahela Jayawardene.

Herath has 51 test wickets against Pakistan in 12 test matches and skipped the one-day series due to death of his mother earlier this month while Jayawardene was given paternity leave.

Mohammad Hafeez, who scored three centuries in the one-day series, forced Pakistan to leave out middle-order batsman Azhar Ali for the first time since he made his test debut in 2010 and played in Pakistan´s all 31 test matches. (AP)

Pakistan also left out number three Azhar Ali to include Mohammad Hafeez, dropped from the last Test series against South Africa in United Arab Emirates in October.

In contrast, Sri Lanka entered the Test with two pacemen and two spinners, with off-break bowler Sachitra Senanayake making his debut.

Teams:
Pakistan: Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shehzad, Khurram Manzoor, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Adnan Akmal, Junaid Khan, Saeed Ajmal, Rahat Ali, Bilawal Bhatti.

Australia win for 4-0 lead - now for series sweep

MELBOURNE: Australia cruised to an eight-wicket win over demoralised England with more than a day to spare Sunday to claim a 4-0 series lead and stand on the cusp of an Ashes whitewash.

Led by a century from opener Chris Rogers and a 136-run stand with Shane Watson, the Australians had few problems getting the required 201 runs before tea on the fourth day to seal England´s fate at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

England contributed to their own demise with two confidence-sapping dropped catches by skipper Alastair Cook early in the day to take all the steam out of the dispirited tourists. The two fielding blunders from the team leader were psychological body blows for England and evidence of batsman Kevin Pietersen´s comments on Saturday in a television interview that the tourists were "mentally fragile".

England now face the monumental challenge of fighting off an Australian clean sweep of the series in the fifth and final Test, starting in Sydney on Friday. "I think it´s a very special win. A lot of people thought we would come here complacent and not have the same willpower to continue to play the same way as in the first three Tests," Australian captain Michael Clarke told reporters.

"For the first time in this series we found ourselves behind in the game and over the last couple of days we´ve been able to turn that around and win convincingly today, so I think the boys deserve a lot of credit. "Playing on his home ground, veteran left-hander Rogers claimed his second Test century after scoring 110 against England in the last series earlier this year at Durham. Rogers, 36, was out caught behind for 116 off 155 balls cutting Monty Panesar, with his team some 31 runs short of victory.

Rogers ran Mitchell Johnson close for man-of-the-match honours. At the end, Watson was unbeaten on 83 with skipper Michael Clarke not out six with Australia 231 for two. It was the best fourth innings run chase in 51 years at the Melbourne Cricket Ground since England´s 237 for three in 1962-63.

While England have been on the end of heavy defeats this Test series, Sunday was a particularly dispiriting loss for England, who were well on top and led the home side by 116 with 10 wickets in hand after lunch on Saturday´s third day.

Man-of-the-match Mitchell Johnson and spinner Nathan Lyon staged a dramatic turnaround, with England bowled out for 179, leaving Australia with what became a comfortable task of scoring 231 in more than two days for victory. It was Australia´s fourth consecutive win over England and comes four months after they lost the last series 3-0 in England.

"The bottom line is we haven´t been good enough," Cook said. "The part of this game that makes it even more frustrating is that we got ourselves into a good place to put some pressure on Australia: 100 ahead and no wickets down in the second innings. "I suppose that might be where we are as a side. We created three chances in that first half-an-hour and we didn´t take them.

"English heads dropped when Cook got his right hand to a snick from Rogers on 19 through slips after wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow failed to respond, and then grassed a straightforward two-handed chance from David Warner (22) off Stuart Broad. Warner scored only three more runs before he was caught behind off Ben Stokes and Australia´s first wicket came down at 64.

Symbolic of England´s malaise, Cook did not bring on his specialist spinner Monty Panesar until 90 minutes into the fourth day and he had little effect on stemming the Australian run flow until he finally removed Rogers.

There will be selection questions ahead of the final Ashes Test for an England team in decline with the most pressure on Panesar, Bairstow, whose technique behind the stumps was exposed, and seamer Tim Bresnan.

PTI, PPP workers clash near Bilawal House

KARACHI: Workers of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) clashed near the Bilawal House here on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner South said police had detained workers of both political parties.

PPP workers have gathered to ensure that roads around Bilawal House remain closed, while PTI workers are demanding that they be opened. Police have sealed roads leading to Bilawal House in the Clifton area of Karachi.

Speaking to media, PTI leader Dr Arif Alivi said his party had no reservations regarding protection for former President Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Dr Alvi said he did not want a clash between workers. According to the PTI leader, the court had ordered that the roads near Bilawal House be opened. Dr Alvi added that the PTI workers had been attacked and police failed to act.

PPP leader Abdul Qadir Patel said PPP workers were attacked by PTI workers. Meanwhile Sharmila Farooqi from the PPP said the PTI had become a party of sit-in and protests. “PPP workers know how to protect and die for the political leaders,” she added.

On Saturday night, a large contingent of riot police were deployed outside Bilawal House after PTI said it would launch a campaign to bring down the security wall.

Policemen and paramilitary troops surrounded Bilawal House to fend off a possible clash between workers of both the parties.
