ISLAMABAD: A day after the Election Commission of Pakistan
(ECP) notified cessation of their membership for failing to declare
assets, 11 lawmakers submitted the yearly statement of their possessions
on Wednesday.
Parliamentarians and members of the provincial assemblies, who had not turned up after repeated reminders by the ECP, submitted details but only after their suspension. They include one senator, three members of National Assembly, two members of Sindh Assembly and five members of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly.
Under the provisions of section 42A of the Representation of the People Act 1976 and section 25A of the Senate Election Act 1975, any member of the Parliament and Provincial Assembly who fails submit the assets details within stipulated time, cease to function as members of respective houses.
These members will not be legally eligible to take part in the proceedings of respective houses and especially cannot take part in legislation until they submit the details of their assets and liabilities and the commission restores their membership.
Senator Faisal Raza Abidi and MNAs Abdul Rehman Khan Kanju, Shah Jahan Baloch and Alizeh Iqbal Haider have submitted the required documents.
Amongst the MPAs who have submitted details of assets include Bashir Ahmed Halipoto and Jameel Ahmed Bhurgari from Sindh Assembly and Muhammad Khan Bahadur, Muhammad Zahid Khan Durrani, Iftikhar Ali Mashwani, Ziaullah Khan Bangash and Sardar Zahoor Ahmed from KP Assembly.
According to the Election Commission, as many as 15 more lawmakers are yet to submit details of assets and liabilities and will continue to cease to function.
They include one senator, four MPAs from Punjab, seven from Sindh, two from KP and a member of Balochistan Assembly.
The ECP has already written to chairman of the Senate, speaker National Assembly and speakers of provincial assemblies that the members who have not submitted the assets details are ceasing to function.
The members who will continue to cease to function include Senator Syed Mustafa Kamal from Sindh, four MPAs from Punjab; Masood Shafqat, Ali Abbas, Waheed Asghar Dogar and Abdul Majeed Khan Niazi.
Seven member from Sindh Assembly; Abdul Rauf Khan Khosa, Ghulam Rasool Khan Jatoi, Syed Faseeh Ahmed Shah, Muhammad Ali Bhutto, Aziz Ahmed Jatoi, Saniya and Mukesh Kumar Chawla.
Two KP MPAs; Muhammad Arif and Shah Faisal Khan. Dr Shama Ishaq Baloch of Balochistan Assembly was also among those who could not declare assets details.
