ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, while taking serious notice of the incident, ordered a judicial inquiry into the tragic clash between two groups in Rawalpindi on Friday.
The chief minister said that strict action will be taken as per the law against the persons involved in the violence. Shahbaz requested the Lahore High Court (LHC) chief justice to hold a judicial inquiry into the incident so that the responsibility could be fixed and the elements be awarded punishment as per the law.
In a statement, Shahbaz Sharif expressed his heartfelt sorrow over the loss of precious human lives in the tragic incident. Expressing sympathies with the bereaved families, he said that the blood of the deceased persons will not go waste. He assured that the murderers will be brought to justice. He said that implementation on the law would be ensured at all costs and the elements creating lawlessness will be brought to justice. The chief minister said that law and order situation has remained satisfactory throughout the province during Ashra-e-Muharram. However, the tragic incident that happened in Rawalpindi destroyed the peace of the city and a few precious lives were lost due to the hooliganism between two groups.
He appealed to the people to remain peaceful and maintain an atmosphere of brotherhood and public peace. He assured the people that the persons involved in this incident will be awarded deterrent punishment. Shahbaz Sharif directed police officers to further enhance security in their respective areas and also depute police officials in plain clothes at public places. He said that the ban on provocative speeches and illegal use of loudspeakers should be implemented strictly.
He said the police officers should remain in touch with the Ulema and take all necessary measures for maintaining a peaceful atmosphere with their consultation. The Punjab chief minister prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the departed souls of the Rawalpindi incident in eternal peace and grant courage and strength to the members of the bereaved families to bear the irreparable loss with fortitude. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, meanwhile, contacted Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman that the Rawalpindi incident would be taken as a test case and action will be taken against all those responsible without any discrimination.
Our Nowshera correspondent adds: Meanwhile, Interior Minster Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan talked to Maulana Samiul Haq by telephone and expressed concern over the Rawalpindi tragedy. The interior minister asked the JUI-S chief to play his role to defuse tension in Rawalpindi. The Maulana asked Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to expose those behind the gruesome incident.
